Historical Milestones
Known as “The World’s Most Notorious Rock Band,” Mötley Crüe is one of the best-selling hard rock groups in the world. The band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles California, with Nikki Sixx on bass, Tommy Lee on the drums, Vince Neil providing lead vocals, and Mick Mars as the lead guitarist.
The band got its name when Mick Mars remembered a previous band he’d performed with calling the group a “motley looking crew,” which led Mars to add the iconic umlauts for the style. The band’s first release was the single "Stick to Your Guns/Toast of the Town” and in 1981 the group came out with its debut album “Too Fast for Love.” On their “Crüesing Through Canada Tour '82” the band was arrested for their dangerous spiked jackets while going through customs and later on the tour, Tommy Lee threw a TV from his window at the band’s hotel. These antics helped the group gain international attention and become a rapid success. Mötley Crüe would open for Ozzy Osbourne on his 1984 tour. The band continued their run-ins with the law and death when Sixx was declared legally dead after a heroin overdose only to be revived by a paramedic. After they cleaned up their acts, the band released its peak album Dr. Feelgood in1989 which would become the No. 1 album on the charts for 114 weeks. With other great albums like “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “shout at the Devil,” and “Generational Swine,” Mötley Crüe is one of the most famous rock metal groups of all time.
