Historical Milestones
Tim Allen is an American actor and comedian. His beginnings in acting stemmed largely from his early education, which helped him discover his love for the arts. At Seaholm High School, Tim Allen was enrolled in theater and music classes that helped him realize his passion for classical music, specifically classical piano. Continuing on the artistic track, Tim Allen attended Central Michigan University, briefly, before transferring to Western Michigan University and specializing in radio and television production. In 1998, Western Michigan recognized his contribution to the Fine Arts program at the school, and they presented him with a Fine Arts degree and the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award.
Tim Allen’s unusual route to fame in the industry began from a single dare from one of his friends. The dare had Allen participating in a comedy night at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Detroit, and he soon gained local recognition because of his performance that night. In fact, he was the star of many local television commercials and cable comedy shows that included Some Semblance of Sanity. After moving to LA, Tim Allen began to do stand-up appearances, late-night talk shows and was a performer at a comedy club called The Comedy Store. His first big break came in 1991 with the ABC show Home Improvement in which Allen played the main character, Tim Taylor. Home Improvement earned Allen People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Male Performer in a New TV Series in 1992, Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1993, People’s Choice Awards Favorite Male TV Performer from 1993-1999, as well as Kids’ Choice Awards Favorite Male TV Actor from 1994-1997. He continued to back-up that well-known role with Disney’s The Santa Clause, the highest-grossing film, and his performance earned him three awards in 1995 for People’s Choice Favorite Comedy Motion Picture Actor, MTV Movie Awards Best Breakthrough Performance and MTV’s Best Comedic Performance. At the same time, Allen also published his best-seller book Don’t Stand Too Close to a Naked Man; his novel was titled on the New York Times best-seller list as well. In 1995, Tim Allen played the voice of Toy Story’s Buzz Lightyear and starred in Disney’s Jungle 2 Jungle two years later. In 2002, Disney produced a sequel to The Santa Clause, before coming out with a third as well. Starring in The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3, Tim Allen’s role as Scott Calvin was recognized amongst Disney fans and young children. In 2009, Allen added to his acting career as he began narrating television and radio commercials throughout the nation, after staring with commercials for “Travel Michigan” agency. He also hosted the 8th Annual TV Land Awards and was the official voice of Chevrolet Cruze, as well as Campbell Soup’s “It’s Amazing What Soup Can Do” campaign, all in 2010. From 2011-2017, Tim Allen devoted much of his time to ABC’s sitcom Last Man Standing in which he played a conservative father focused on conveying his manhood despite living in a house of women. His most recent role is in the Netflix original comedy titled El Camino Christmas. Throughout his career, Tim Allen has been named a Disney Legend because of his roles in Toy Story and The Santa Clause franchises. He was also awarded a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Diecast Hall of Fame in 2017.
