Sean Astin is an American actor, voice actor, director and producer. He is well-known for his film debut as Mikey in The Goonies. His beginnings stem from a family with artistic talents where his biological father Michael Tell was a writer, music promoter, and publisher of a newspaper, his mother Patty Duke was an actress, and his stepfather John Astin was an actor, television director, and voice artist. With a familial upbringing such as Sean’s, it only suited that he would become a Hollywood face.
Sean Astin’s early career began with his first acting role in a 1981 television movie titled Please Don’t Hit Me, Mom. This role was perfect for 9-year-old Sean Astin as he played the role of an 8-year-old child whose mom was played by his real-life mother Patty Duke. Four years later, Sean Astin made his first film debut as Mikey in the popular comedy The Goonies. His experience with The Goonies, and at the young age of thirteen, made him a great fit for Disney films and for playing the role of young teenagers and adolescents. In the late 1980’s and 1990’s, Astin starred in The B.R.A.T Patrol, Like Father Like Son, White Water Summer, The War of the Roses, Memphis Belle, Toy Soldiers, Encino Man, and Rudy. These movies have given Sean Astin a wide range of acting experience from Disney movies to a World War II film and college football biopic. More than just an actor, Astin directed and co-produced the 1994 short film titled Kangaroo Court; Kangaroo Court was, in fact, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. In the early 2000s, Sean Astin gained much popularity with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, playing the role of fictional sidekick Samwise Gamgee. The trilogy including The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, presented many awards the series including eleven Academy Awards, one being the Academy Award for Best Picture. For his outstanding individual performance as Samwise Gamgee, Astin himself earned seven award nominations and won five awards: The Saturn Award, the Sierra Award, the Seattle Film Critics Award, and the Utah Film Critics Award, and the Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male or Female in an Effects Film. As many new him as The Lord of the Rings’ Samwise Gamgee at this point in his career, Sean Astin continued to work in film with his performance in popular roles in 50 First Dates, Click, and television films such as Law & Order. He continued to showcase more than just acting talent in directing a TV episode titled “Soulless” for the series Angel and many voice-over roles for Animal Planet, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon. His more recent film roles include his role of Matthew in The Truth & Dramatized New Testament Bible, a cosmetic surgeon in a fake move trailer called Boobathon, and the role of Jim Kent on the FX drama The Strain. In 2017, he starred in season two of the popular American science-fiction, horror television series Stranger Things.
