English-American actor Peter Mayhew is best known for his role as Chewbacca in the Star Wars series. Peter Mayhew is seven feet and three inches tall and suffers from Marfan syndrome, a connective tissue disorder. Mayhew’s uniqueness has positively helped his acting career.

Peter Mayhew’s early work began when he landed his first acting job in 1976 after the producers of Sinband and the Eye of the Tiger discovered him when they came across a newspaper article that photographed him and his large feet. In need of a man to play the role of the mythical creature, minotaur, the producers casted Peter Mayhew for the role. His large size continued to present him with acting roles, as Star Wars’ producer George Lucas turned to Mayhew in order to play the role of the hairy alien Chewbacca. To this day, Mayhew is largely recognized for his portrayal of Chewbacca in five Star Wars films: the original trilogy’s Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Mayhew is oftentimes in Chewbacca costume outside of the Star Wars films, appearing on NBC’s Identity and earning the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV Film Awards in 1997 for his role as Chewbacca. Dressed as Chewbacca, he was also honored at the release of PlayStation Portable, as he held up the new PSP as Chewbacca himself. Due to health issues, Peter Mayhew retired from playing the hairy alien and Joonas Suotamo replaced him in the Star Wars films after Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In addition to Star Wars, Mayhew also appeared in the horror film Terror, a neo-noir film titled Yesterday Was a Lie, and the voice role for Dragon Ball GT: A Hero’s Legacy. He wrote two books, “Growing Up Giant” and “My Favorite Giant,” about his differences and in order to help children grow up without hating their differences or feeling bullied.
