About Les Paul Autographed Memorabilia & Collectibles

Historical Milestones

Les Paul was an American musician who designed his own electric guitar in 1941. Les Paul was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin on June 9, 1915. Ironically, Les Paul wasn’t the greatest musician at an early age. In fact, his teachers tried to dissuade him from pursuing music. But Les Paul didn’t let this stop him; he taught himself the harmonica, guitar, and banjo. At the age of nine, he built his first crystal radio and the next year built a harmonica holder out of a coat hanger. During his teenage years, Paul played country music throughout the Midwest, including live music on radio stations under his stage name “Rhubarb Red.”

Throughout the 1930s, Paul developed an interest in jazz music as well and performed as the Les Paul Trio throughout Chicago. By the 1940s, he was an already established jazz sensation, playing alongside Nat King Cole and Kate Smith. In 1941 he changed the world of music as he developed the first solid-body guitar. Paul and the guitar manufacturer Gibson designed a Les Paul guitar and the company developed the well-known Gibson Les Paul, which musicians such as Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and Keith Richards have used. His 1941 solid-body guitar will forever be a prized invention for the music industry.

Les Paul has brought the world of music so much more than just a great recording career; he brought the world its first solid-body guitar.
