Historical Milestones
Alice Cooper is a singer, songwriter, and actor that is dubbed, “The Godfather of Shock Rock” for his combination of music mixed with theatrical performances that provided real shock value for his audience due to their violent nature. Cooper’s birth name is Vincent Damon Furnier, with him eventually taking the name of his band. In the 1960’s, Furnier started a band with him providing the vocals, Glen Buxton on lead guitar, Michael Bruce on rhythm guitar, Neil Smith on the drums and Dennis Dunaway on bass guitar. After years and few studio albums being released, the band Alice Cooper finally had a breakthrough with their third album, Love It to Death. One of the biggest reasons for the success of that album was the single “I’m Eighteen”, which was the band’s first hit single.
The Alice Cooper band had seven albums before they broke up, and Furnier decided to adopt the name Alice Cooper as his own to start a solo career in 1975. In 2011, the original band Alice Cooper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. First with the band, and then in his solo career, Alice Cooper has made a name for himself based on his elaborate costumes worn on stage and combination of horror movie values into his music and performances. As an actor, Cooper made appearances in horror films like Monster Dog, Prince of Darkness and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare where his ability to harness the creepy values of that genre helped his performance.
Alice Cooper’s career spans five decades, starting as the front man for a very successful band of the same name, until an even more successful career as a solo artist.
