The movie centers on two characters throughout, Carl Fredrickson (Edward Asner) and a little young boy who is a keen wilderness explorer, named Russell. As a little boy, Carl is awed by the well known explorer named Charles Muntz. Charles Muntz claims to have found the skeleton of a rare bird from South America, but later on he is exposed when they find out that the relics are fabricated. Muntz is stripped down of his glory and in his anger says that he will not return until he has captured that bird alive. Meanwhile Carl meets a tom boyish girl named Ellie, they grow up together and get married and vow to have their house built near the great waterfalls known as Paradise falls. Ellie grows weak and dies, but Carl is determined to fulfill their dream. He decides that he would take their house to paradise falls by tying it with helium balloons. He is accidentally joined by Russell. In the trip they discover the rare bird which was been searched by Muntz. The story later on goes to reveal how muntz finds out that Carl and Russell know about the bird, and a fight issues, resulting in the death Muntz while Carl and Russell return home safely.
