The film centers on just a single day of Jake Hoyt’s (Ethan Hawke) life that is a young LAPD cop. He is a married man and is a father to a little girl. Detective Alonzo Harris is assigned the job to evaluate Jake. Harris is the key to career advancement for Jake though Jake doesn’t know, as Harris is narcotics officer. They two men meet over breakfast, where Alonzo is keen to know a story from Jake’s police career life. Jake ardently narrates an incident where he and a female officer who was in training catch a case of driving while intoxicated but they soon discover that the caught man is a recognized criminal and is in possession of illegal drugs and also in possession of guns. As Jake narrates his story, Harris is disappointed that there is no trace of sexual relation of Jake with the female officer. The story unfolds and Jake is seen along with the detective in a series of events which unfold.
