The World is a Chinese movie and was released in the year 2004. The movie was written and directed by Jia Zhangke. The movie’s cast includes Zhao Taoand Chen Taisheng. The scenes were shot in the Theme Park located around the Beijing World Park as well as in the park by name ‘Window of the World”. According to sources Jia got his first official approval from the Chinese Government for this film and he had moved out of his home place Shanxi for the first time to film The World.

Jia’s Xstream Pictures, Office Kitano of Japan and Lumen Films from France jointly produced the movie. The film had received financial support from many corporations including Shanghai Film studio, Bandai Visual and Tokyo FM.

 

 

The World is about two workers and their relationship. They work in the Beijing World Park, Zhao Tao as Tao and Chen Taisheng as Taisheng and after twists and turns the movie ends with their entrapment in a gas leak. They do not feel that they are going to die and that would be the beginning of their life. The movie’s premiere was held in Venice Film Festival in the year 2004 but lost the Golden Lion Award to Vera Drake, a movie drama by Mike Leigh. Jia’s ‘Still Life’ won the same award two years later. The movie was also shown in the New York Film Festival and received a limited release rights in the New York City during July 1, 2005. Jia got the idea of making this film after several years of his stay in Beijing. He wanted to show Beijing as World city through this movie.
