Scarface

Scarface is a crime movie in 1983 written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian De Palma. The movie starred the brilliant actor Al Pacino as Tony Montana. The story revolves around a Cuban refugee who came to Florida and became a gangster during the cocaine boom in the 1980s. The movie portrays the rise and tragic fall of Tony Montana. The movie was a tribute to Ben Hecht and Howard Hawks who were the original writers of the film in 1932. There were criticisms on the movie for its visual violence and graphic language but despite the criticism, the movie was a huge box office success.

Tony Montana was among the 125,000 Cubans who came to Miami through Mariel Boatlift. He was one of the 25,000 people aboard who had a criminal record. Together with his friend, Manolo Ribera, played by Steven Bauer, they were placed in “Freedom Town”, a place under the freeway where refugees without green cards are kept. They were stuck in “Freedom Town” because of their criminal records. However, an opportunity came when Frank Lopez (played by Robert Loggia), a wealthy individual, offered a job for them where they will kill a Cuban security agent in exchange for a green card. They took the job without too much thought and killed Emilio Rebenga during a riot. At first, they work for menial jobs but soon grew restless started linking themselves with drug dealers. It was here that they started to rise in the crime world and later on, met their eventual downfall. 

Scarface was produced by Martin Bregman and was starred by Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, F. Murray Abraham and Harris Yulin. The movie was distributed by Universal Pictures with a running time of approximately 169 minutes. The movie was a huge success with a budget of only about $25 million but grossed around $65 million. The movie has strong influence on succeeding gangster movies thus making it as one of the best gangster movies ever made.
