In 1925, the comedy film Sally was released starring Colleen Moore. It is based on a role made famous in Broadway by Marilyn Miller. It is about an orphan girl named Sally who is working as a waitress/dishwasher in a restaurant. She meets the overthrown Duke of Checkergovinia, played by Leon Errol who also played the role in the Broadway stage play. The duke is now working as a waiter in the same restaurant. Sally has ambitions of getting out of her current situation and yearns for a better life. Even as a child in the orphanage, she knew that she excels in dancing and she has honed that talent even more while living with a dance teacher named Ms. DuFey played by Louise Beaudet. One of the restaurant’s regular customers, Mr. Blaire Farquar helps her to finally get a break onstage. She is signed on by an agent, and is made to impersonate a very popular Russian dancer. Blaire and Sally meet again at a party held by Mrs. Ten Broeck played by Myrtle Stedman. This time he fall in love with her but she jilts him because she thinks she only loves her now because she has become popular. Still he persists and convinces her to think about her feelings again; after all she is really in love with him.

 

Sally was again released to the theaters in 1929. It was revolutionary in the sense that it was one of the first movies with simultaneous or synchronized talk or talkies. The “talkies” heralded the eventual end of the silent movies era. Even silent film star Charlie Chaplin who has the Chaplin, Charlie-8x10 Black and White Photo was not convinced it would last. But it was shown with the Broadway actress Marilyn Miller reprising her role on stage. Alexander Gray plays Blaire Farquar. Music for the movie was composed by Irving Berlin who has the Berlin, Irving-4 ¾ x2 ½ Signature Strip , Al Dubin and Joe Burke. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for Jack Oakey in 1930.

 

According to many reviews, Marilyn Miller was considered an icon during her time, and following her immense popularity at the time her name became one of the more popular names for girls in the US. Even the actress Norma Jean Baker was urged to change her name to Marilyn Monroe because of her resemblance to Marilyn Miller.
