The story is about the murder of Laura Hunt played by Gene Tierney, a beautiful and successful advertising supervisory.

Otto Preminger was first offered a play draft by name ‘Ring Twice for Laura’ by Vera Caspary’s agent. The director liked the story and the twist in the story and asked the author for a rewrite. Due to difference of opinion and Caspary’s failures in furthering the project made her to discard the project totally. Caspary finally made the novel with the title Laura that was bought by 20th Century Fox for about $30,000. After many conflicts and interventions Preminger directed the film according to his plan. A New York detective police played by Dana Andrews investigates the murder. Through his investigation and reading her letters the detective becomes infatuated with the dead Laura and the movie ends with the death of Lydecker who is also suspected to be in love with Laura.

 

According to sources the movie won the Academy Award for the best cinematography in black and white by Joseph LaShelle. Other Academy Awards that were nominated was for the best director, best art direction and interiors, best supporting actor and best screenplay.
