All its impressive detailing and special effects notwithstanding, the movie has quite a simple plot with some old fashion romance and sappy, sentimental value attached to it. The plot features a brave and reckless serial firefighter, Pete Sandich (Richard Dreyfuss) who is in love with the beautiful Dorinda (Holly Hunter). Dorinda is a pilot as well and works as a dispatcher. Her perpetual worry about her lover heading for disaster along with some good old advice from his friend Al (John Goodman) forces Pete to opt for a safer job as a firefighter trainer. Unfortunately he is killed in what was to have been his final mission. However instead of going to Heaven, Pete comes face to face with the businesslike angel Hap (Audrey Hepburn) and is assigned with a new job. He needs to train his inept and awkward successor Ted (Brad Johnson) who in turns conveniently falls for Dorinda. So Pete as the guardian angel must now inspire Ted and let go of his love to enter heaven.

 

According to reviewers, despite featuring an A line cast and a lot of whimsical sentimental scenes, the film failed to rouse the viewer’s sentiments. It is believed to be one of “Spielberg’s lesser films”.
