Sopranos: One of the Best

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

As time gets further away from the last episode of the Sopranos, I am starting to miss the show more. I wish they would have some new episodes but all I have left it seems are the memories. The great acting combined with so many other great attributes that existed in that show: the production values, cinematography, editing, the list goes on, created so many lasting vivid memories.

I grew up around guys like that and I even think that ‘Paulie” (Tony Scirico) was actually a guy I knew and feared coming up as a kid in Brooklyn. If he had a brother named Carmine, then I would be certain. It was cool to know those guys and certainly important when negoitiating your way down the street in those days. You had to know someone in order to secure a safe passage from your house to the subway station. Not always, but sometimes, you would be taunted or actually physically assaulted by the pepole hanging out on the corners.

That’s why it was such a great experience watching the Sopranos and being reminded of their day to day activities through the safety of my living room television.

The Sopranos is a great show and one that I can view over and over again as a piece of television history and nothing can ever take that away.

Alicia Keys

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Alicia Keys is one of my most favorite singers. She has a quality to her voice that is outstanding. It wasn’t until I saw an episode of “Iconoclasts” that I really developed a great appreciation for the personal side of her life. She and Ruby Dee were paired together and the love, respect and appreciation for each other’s creative talent exuded on the screen. Alicia and Ruby walk together through Harlem and we see pictures of Ruby Dee in the beginning of her career, on stage at a repertoire theater. She is about sixteen years old. Then we enter a theater that was built by Alicia Keys which was used for up and coming performers. It was inspiring to hear how Alicia with her humble beginnings was able to focus on her career and make it all the way to the top.
