Xavier Cugat was an American- Spanish bandleader who has spent his life Havana, Cuba. He was a trained arranger and violinist and his personality focused on the spread of Latin music in the United States. Cugat was also a good cartoonist. In the city of New York, he became the leader of the Waldorf-Astoria. Today, the personal papers of Cugat are stored in Biblioteca de Catalunva.
Cugat was born in Spain with a different name. He and his family migrated to Cuba when he was five. Cugat was trained to play violin because he was asked to join in an orchestra. On the 6th of July 1915, his family and Cugat arrived in the city of New York as an immigrant. When Cugat decided to take music seriously, he recorded with Columbia Records which was known as Columbia’s Epic during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1930s as well as 1950s, he recorded for RCA Victor. He has also done recording with Decca Records and Mercury Records. Dinah Shore, a member of Victor records, made his first recordings. In the year of 1940, his recording entitled Perfidia became successful. This big hit was also followed by another record of him. But, only few became a huge trend.
