He dropped out in his freshman year to pursue his acting career and joined the Stella Adler acting classes in New York City. His only Broadway performance ‘A loss of Roses’ gave him a best actor Tony award nomination. In 1960 he enlisted in the Air National Guard. Another actor who has served for the country is Burgess Meredith.

He started his television career and his long list of films with ‘Splendor in the Grass’ directed by Elia Kazan who also worked with Burl Ives in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’. Beatty was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in this film in the Best actor category.

Later on in 1967 he produced the critical and commercially successful ‘Bonny and Clyde’ which starred Faye Dunaway as his female lead. After the success of his venture he acted in other movies including ‘Shampoo’ and ‘Heaven can wait’ which made Warren Beatty the ruling star of the box office. He went on to make ‘Reds’ and was met with the same triumph. He has been nominated for these movies along with ‘Bulworth’, ‘Dick Tracy’ and ‘Bugsy’ in the Academy Awards.

His other big-budget films ‘Ishtar’ and ‘Town and Country’ were not well-received. In 2007 he became the Honorary Chairman of the Stella Adler Studio of acting.

Warren Beatty is also the brother of critically acclaimed actress Shirley MacLaine. He has dated a number of leading ladies including Britt Ekland before finally settling down with Annette Benning.

In 2008 Beatty was honored with the AFI Life Achievement award. According to industry experts during his reign and even today in Hollywood he is considered as one of the most powerful men around.
