Tony Oladipo Allen was a professional musician born on the August 12, 1940 in Lagos, Nigeria. Aside from being a musician, he was also a songwriter, drummer and a composer. He had worked and lived in Paris. His masterpiece was his autobiography entitled “Tony Allen: Master Drummer of Afrobeat”.
Tony Allen was a musical director of the band owned by Fela Anikulapo Kuti. This has been established from the year of 1968 up to 1979. The band served as a medium to which he was called as the main co-founders of Afrobeat music genre. Even Fela once said without Tony, Afrobeat would not be in sight. Brian Eno proclaimed him as one who has lived to be the greatest drummer.
When his age was just eighteen, he started playing his drum-kit and at the same time he worked as an engineer for a radio station in Nigeria. His father Juju influenced him with a traditional ceremonial music of Yoruba. He worked hard so that he could uplift the uniqueness of his own voice by studying magazine articles of Max Roach & Art Blakey.
