Tom has been cited saying that he gained 30 pounds for the role. Ironically, Hanks lost 30 pounds for “Philadelphia”, which also starred Denzel Washington. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his roles in “Philadelphia” and “Forest Gump”, reportedly the second actor in history to achieve this mark of distinction.
On Veteran’s Day in 1999, Tom Hanks received the Distinguished Public Service Award for his work in “Saving Private Ryan”. This film of epic proportions also included Matt Damon
, Vin Diesel, Ted Danson, Giovanni Ribisi, and was directed by Steven Spielberg. Noted for its realistic portrayal of World War II, “Saving Private Ryan” is said to be one the highest grossing movies of all time.
Tom Hanks has also expanded is talents into producing with “Cast Away” in 2000 and “Where the Wild Things Are” in 2009. “Where the Wild Things Are” was adapted from Maurice Sendak's 1963 children's book and it also included the voice of Forest Whitaker.
