In 1986, Lang tried his luck to portray the character of Dwayne Hicks in the motion picture Aliens, which was directed by James Cameron. However, the role was later on given to James Remar. By the same year, he was seen in the film Manhunter together with Dennis Farina.

His brilliance in acting was greatly acknowledged in the Broadway play The Speed of Darkness where he won the “Best Supporting Actor” in Joseph Jefferson Awarding in 1989 and was also nominated two years later as “Best Actor” in Tony Award.

Lang also had two consecutive movies done in 1993. One was Gettysburg, in which he played the part of George Pickett, and the other one was Tombstone together with Wyatt Earp with the Wyatt Earp Hugh Obrien autograph display.

He starred in the 2000 remake series The Fugitive, in which Julian Moore was also featured in its original version in 1993.

Lang was also known as General Stonewall Jackson in the 2003 film Gods and Generals with his co-star Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

His versatility in his craft was also recognized when he joined the stars of Desperate Housewives in 2004 as Rex Van De Camp.

Lang portrayed the role of Colonel Quaritch which was supposedly reserved for Michael Biehn in the 2009 blockbuster film Avatar.
