Sophia Loren is an Italian actress born on September 20, 1934 with the real name of Sofia Villani Scicolone. She is the first actress who won an Academy Award in 1962 in a non-English-speaking performance category. She also won 50 other international awards such as Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Awards and the BAFTA Award. She was married to Carlo Ponti and blessed with two children, namely Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti.
Loren first starring role was in 1953 in the film Aida. She also starred opposite with Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant in The Pride and The Passion. In 1958, she signed up a contract with Paramount Pictures that made her an international film star. Among her films under Paramount Pictures includes Desires Under the Elms that co-starred Anthony Perkins.
When she became a mother, she worked less in such a way that she only made little appearances in few films and musicals. However, though she seldom made films in 1970’s yet she co-starred other veteran stars like Martin Sheen and Richard Harris. During the 1980’s she preferred to act infrequently so as to devote more time in raising her sons.
Lately, she received Academy Honorary Award from the Golden Globe as well as from Oscar. In 1994, she was nominated in Golden Globe for the film Ready to Wear that co-stars Julia Roberts. There are other films she starred that earned her nominations in the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Recently, Sophia Loren is working in Italy in a biopic television series that portrays her early life.
