Swayze finished his elementary to high school education in Oak Forest, Houston – the same city where actress-songwriter Lyle Lovett graduated in college. During his stay in Houston, Swayze discovered his multiple athletic and artistic skills, including classical ballet, ice skating, and acting. He became a football player during high school and aimed to have a football scholarship to college. However, he suffered from a knee injury, which had ended his dreams as an athlete. Later, he studied gymnastics in San Jacinto College. In 1972, Swayze moved to New York City to finish his formal dancing lesson in Joffrey and Harkness ballet schools.

Swayze became a part of the long-running Broadway musical production Grease. He had his first appearance in a film when he played Ace in the feature film Skatetown, U.S.A. Swayze also became a part of the 1983 drama film The Outsiders where he portrayed as the older brother of Rob Lowe and C. Thomas Howel.

Swayze had brief stints in various television series, including M*A*S*H and The Renegades. However, his first major success in the television series was in North and South. His popularity rose when he played Johnny Castle, a dance instructor in the 1987 romantic film Dirty Dancing, where he worked with Jennifer Grey. In 1991, People magazine called him as its Sexiest Man Alive.
