Picon was born on February 28, 1898 in New York City. She was raised as Malka Opiekun by her parents who were Polish emigrants. Her career started at the young age of six in Yiddish theater. Through appearing in theaters, she enhanced her acting talent until her parents decided to let her to go in the showbiz arena. Her first success was in 1912 at the Arch Street Theater. Her first and became one of the popular movies during her time was the "East and West" which dealt with old Jewish cultures. In this film, she played the role as an American-born daughter and she co-starred her real-life husband, Jacob Kalich. She also appeared in Broadway wherein she appeared in the Jerry Herman's musical "Milk and Honey". In the film "The Naked City," she played a small role. This was followed by her first major English-language role in the film "Come Blow Your Horn" where she co-starred with Frank Sinatra. In the movie "For Pete's Sake," she was along with Barbra Streisand wherein she played the role of Mrs. Cherry.
