Michael Phelps is an American swimmer who has won a total of 14 Olympic golds, the most by any swimmer or by any Olympian for that matter. He also holds the record for most gold medals won in a single Olympics; he has won eight in the2008 Beijing Olympics that shattered the previous record of seven by another American swimmer Mark Spitz in the 1972 Munich Olympics. Michael Fred Phelps started his training as a swimmer when he was 11 years old. He trained under Bob Bowman who was also a swimmer for the Florida State University from 1983 to 1985. Bowman, according to Phelps was a disciplinarian and training with him was the best thing that he ever did, and cannot think of training with anyone else. In 2004, he even followed Bowman to Michigan when he accepted the post as head coach for the University of Michigan team. He went to school there so that he can train with Bowman but did not take up any degree. When, after the 2008 Olympics Bowman returned to Maryland, Phelps also went with him.

 

Phelps achievements in the pool made him the World Swimmer of the Year for six times as well as the American Swimmer of the Year for eight times. All in all his total medal haul amounts to 54 medals from just about all the major competitions in the world; forty-seven golds, seven silvers, and 2 bronzes from the Olympics, World and Pan Pacific. According to sources, these accomplishments have earned for him the Sports Illustrated Magazine’s award as Sportsman of the Year.
