He created the part of Oscar in "Sweet Charity" on Broadway opposite Gwen Verdon in 1966 garnering a Tony nomination. He also had played the role again  opposite of Shirley Maclaine on film. John McMartin was cast in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum by Stephen Sondheim. Sadly his role was cut before the show opened.
