Denzel Washington is a multi-awarded American male star and director. He has portrayed real-life roles for Steve Biko, Frank Lucas, Malcolm X, Melvin B. Tolson, Herman Boone and Rubin “Hurricane” Carter.

Denzel Hayes Washington Jr. was born on December 28, 1954 in Mt. Vernon, New York. His parents are Lennis and Reverend Denzel Washington, Sr. His mother owns and operates a beauty parlor and his dad was a Pentecostal minister and was working in a department store within their locality. Denzel finished B.A. in Drama and Journalism in 1977 at the Fordham University. He studied acting at the Lincoln Center and kept on snagging the character role of The Emperor Jones by Eugene O’Neill and Othello of Shakespeare where his acting talent was positively recognized. During his graduation, he received scholarship for the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco which he grabbed but after one year, he decided to go back to New York to start in professional acting.

Denzel Washington started his professional acting with the television movie Wilma. In 1981, he had his first movie Carbon Copy. He later had his first big break project to star in a popular TV hospital drama series St. Elsewhere for six years (1982-1988). Since he started, he continued to appear many television shows, movies and stage plays. In 1987, he played the real-life story of Steve Biko in Cry Freedom by Richard Attenborough in which movie he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor during the Oscar Awards. In 1989, he acted as a defiant ex-slave in the movie Glory where he won the Oscar’s Best Supporting Actor. In his career, he has won three awards from the Golden Globe and two from the Academy Awards. He was noted and recognized as the second black artist, next to Sidney Poitier, to have won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his character role in the movie Training Day in 2001.
