His earlier film roles were in ‘Foul Play’ with Chuck McCann and ‘Oh Heavenly Dog’. He became a well-known face for the ‘National Lampoon’ series of films. His other films include ‘Fletch’, ‘Caddyshack’ and ‘Three Amigos’ where he worked alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. This trio got the opportunity to host ‘Saturday Nights Live’ together which was the only time this show ever had 3 people hosting together. He has even hosted the Academy awards like another actress Carol Burnett.

According to sources Chevy lost out on the role played by Kevin Spacey for ‘American Beauty’, saying that it would damage his family oriented image.

In recent years he has appeared in the television series ‘Brothers and Sisters’ opposite Sally Fields and also on ‘Law & Order’.
