Born as Cherilyn Sarkisian, Cher has won several awards for her music and acting including an Academy award, an Emmy award, 3 Golden Globes, a Grammy award and a People’s Choice award.
By the age of seventeen she had started her career. She was a member of the popular duo Sonny & Cher. Together they released albums which gained popularity. Later their songs started topping the charts. Between 1965 and 1972 the duo had 11 Billboard 40 hits starting with ‘The Beat Goes On’.
They then started appearing for television shows ‘The Ed Sullivan show’, ‘Top of the Pops’ and ‘Ready Steady Go’.
Sonny and Cher also had a child together. Later they had a show, ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy hour’. Their guests included Glen Campbell, Carol Burnett, Farrah Fawcett and Raquel Welch among others.
Cher’s solo albums were also topping the charts. Her debut album ‘All I Really Want to do’ was followed by ‘The Sonny side of Cher’. While her singing career had slowed down she entered the acting world with ‘Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean’ and ‘Silkwood’ with Meryl Streep and Craig T Nelson followed by ‘Mask’. She also earned critical acclaim with her later movies, ‘The Witches of Eastwick’, ‘Suspect’ and ‘Moonstruck’. In ‘If these Walls Could Talk’ she has starred alongside Demi Moore and Catherine Keener.
In 2000, the Lifelong Contribution to the Music Industry award was given to Cher. Her album ‘Believe’ put her on the Hot 100 rock era. At 52 she was the oldest woman to have achieved this. Another upcoming singer who has started her foray into the world of acting is Miley Cyrus.
