Yusuf Islam was born on July 21, 1948 with his real name Steven Demetre Georgiou! However, he was preferably called as Cat Stevens, as his stage name who rose in the music industry as a famous educator, singer-songwriter, philanthropist, multi-instrumentalist and he converted to Islam!

 

In the early 1970s, he recorded some of his albums called “Teaser and the Firecat” and “Tea for the Tillerman”. These songs have reached its triple platinum certification in the entire United States as proclaimed by the RIAA. Another album that he released was entitled “Catch Bull at Four”, it became number one in Billboard for three weeks. In fact, Cat Stevens earned two of his ASCAP awards for the song which he called as “The First Cut is the Deepest”, that has been a major single of many artists!

On the other hand, Stevens has converted to Islam in the late month of December 1977. The next year he also adopted his name Yusuf Islam! He also decided to put all his precious guitars in an auction for charitable purposes. He had left his own career in the music industry to devote on philanthropic and educational causes in the community of Muslim. He promoted world peace and due to that reason he was given several awards that mainly include “Mediterranean Prize for Peace” and “Man for Peace Award”. It was only in 2006 that he returned in the music industry to focus on his album, “An Other Cup”. Right now, he took his professional same as Yusuf with his recent album “Roadsinger”. This album was successfully released on May 5, 2009.
