Brooke Christa Camille Shields is an American actress, model, and author better-known for her roles in the films Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, and in television shows Lipstick Jungle, That 70's Show, starring
Topher Grace and
Ashton Kutcher, and Suddenly Susan.
Shields was born on May 31, 1965 in New York City to a well-known family, with businessman Frank Shields, her father and Teri Shields, her mother. At 11 months old, Shields became a model for Ivory Soap, photographed by Francesco Scavullo. Shields became a successful model with model agent Eileen Ford, who revealed in her Lifetime Network biography that she opened her children’s division only for Shields. As a child actress, Shields’ first major role was in Louis Malle's Pretty Baby (1978), in which she played a child living in a brothel. According to reviews, this movie had been criticized and questions on child pornography had been raised.
After two decades of films, Shields is best known for her role in 1980’sThe Blue Lagoon, which included several nude scenes between teenage lovers on an island, and 1981’s Endless Love, which was first rated X by the MPAA. Moreover, Shields was chosen four times to receive the People's Choice Award for Favorite Young Performer from 1981 to 1984.
Furthermore, Shields played lesbian Lily in the 1998 film The Misadventures of Margaret.
