Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Jewish family. After attending the University of Hawaii to study acting, she took a minor acting role in the film adaptation of James Mischener’s novel Hawaii. She then moved to New York and made her stage debut by starring in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.

In 1972, after signing with Atlantic records, Midler released her first album The “Divine Miss M,” which received platinum status, won a Grammy Award and was produced by Barry Manilow. In the next couple of years, five albums followed, all of which escalated Bette Midler’s career as a recording artist.

After a string of TV appearances, she surprised everyone with her performance in The Rose, a 1979 film that displayed Midler’s acting talent, securing her two Golden Globe awards and an Academy Award nomination. The movie’s soundtrack also helped her earn another Grammy as well as platinum status.

In 1986, she worked alongside Richard Dreyfuss in the comedy Down and Out in Beverly Hills, which marked a series of funny, comedic roles. Other comedy films she starred in are Ruthless People (with Danny DeVito), Outrageous Fortune, and Big Business.

In 1991, Bette was James Caan’s partner in the WWII drama For the Boys, and in 1996, she formed a trio with Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton in The First Wives Club. In 2004, she starred in the remake of The Stepford Wives, which was well-received by critics and fans alike.

Most recently, it’s been reported that Miller will release a new album in 2010.
