In 1951, Palmer got her first acting job when she became part of a daily soap opera called Miss Susan. She landed the job after being discovered in a party in the apartment of actor Frank Sutton. This marked her career in television, and later on she appeared in several other TV shows.

Palmer made her first appearance on Broadway in 1955 when she joined the cast of The Grand Prize. On the same year, her career in the movies also began. Some of the films she appeared in include The Long Gray Line (starring Tyrone Power with the Power, Tyrone ‘I poured My Heart into a Song’ 1939), Mister Roberts (starring Henry Fonda and Jack Lemmon), and Queen Bee (starring Joan Crawford).

In 1957, Palmer starred alongside Anthony Perkins in the Oscar-nominated movie The Tin Star. Then in 1958, she depicted the role of undercover agent Phyllis Carter/Lynn Stuart in The True Story of Lynn Stuart, with Kim Spalding starring as her husband.

Although Palmer never really liked the famous thriller Friday the 13th, the actress agreed to star in the film because of her need to purchase a new car, sources said. In 2003, she was again asked to play Mrs. Vorhees in Freddy vs. Jason, but turned the offer down.

Some of her later appearances include Knots Landing (with Joan Van Ark), As the World Turns, and Bell Witch: The Movie.

Today, Palmer mostly spends her time in her Indiana home.
